Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, make friends and feel connected to your community.

Our wonderful team of volunteers are at the heart of making us a vibrant and welcoming community organisation. Many of our programs and activities, as well as general centre operations and maintenance, rely on the contribution of countless dedicated and passionate volunteers.

If you would like to volunteer with us or if you have a particular project that you would like to get started, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Opportunities for volunteer engagement at the centre include:

  • Food Co-op, including daily bus runs to Foodbank to collect groceries and products
  • General centre and yard maintenance and cleaning
  • Reception and office administrative support
  • English language and literacy tutoring
  • Basic computer skills training
  • Community Garden maintenance and development
  • Business mentoring to develop social enterprise activities
  • Job seeker mentoring, including job search, application writing and interview preparation

BRIEF INTERVENTION (FINANCIAL) WORKER POSITION

Description:

belong operates the Acacia Ridge Community Centre, a vibrant and busy neighbourhood centre with strong connections to the diverse local communities. belong has been operating since 1989, offering a values-based, family-friendly place of employment.

The Brief Intervention Worker is a new position at belong. The Worker will follow relevant policy and procedures to distribute Emergency Relief resources to people in times of financial crisis.  Access to Emergency Relief is considered universal and is a safety net for people experiencing financial distress or hardship and who have limited means of resources to help them alleviate their financial crisis.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • To offer financial and material aid to community members in line with budget and client circumstances;
  • In conjunction with the belong staff team, refer clients to other belong programs and services, as well as external services offered in Brisbane Southside.
  • Fulfill administrative and reporting requirement associated with funding and organizational requirements, including but not limited to:
  • Client Consents
  • Client data records for the DSS DEX portal reporting.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Qualifications and Checks

  • Queensland Working with Children (Blue Card)
  • Must have work rights in Australia

Essential skills and experience

  • Demonstrated experience in working in a community setting
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and sympathetically assess client needs and identify an appropriate service response.
  • Ability to computer programs such as navigating email and web-based services including mygov.com, email and client database systems
  • Ability to comprehend and adhere to funding and organisational policies and procedures.
  • ability to communicate with a culturally diverse community from many walks of life. We are seeking a candidate who is reliable, calm and with attention for detail and a non-judgemental approach.
  • Ability to engage with persons from diverse backgrounds and some possibly with challenging behaviours

Desirable

  • Experience working with culturally diverse teams
  • Qld Drivers Licence
  • Diploma or degree in social sciences / community services
  • Current Senior First Aid Certificate
